Pudding Shots

Thank you to my dear friend Julie who introduced me to pudding shots! I'm going to make a bold claim here - Pudding shots are the new Jello shot. If these have not made an appearance at any of your friends' parties yet, then prepare to become an instant hero among your group. These are imperative for any Girls' Weekend or Bachelorette Party. They are also going to be amazing at my upcoming Halloween Party.
Pudding shots are creamy little alcohol-infused spoonfuls of HEAVEN. They are great for you, the hostess, because you can make them a week ahead of time and freeze them. There are a million flavor variations to suit your party and your tastes.

Here is the basic recipe:

1 small box of INSTANT chocolate pudding

3/4 C Milk (skim works fine)

1/4 C Vodka

1/2 C Bailey's Irish cream

8 oz Extra Creamy Cool Whip

Mix the pudding mix with the milk with an electric mixer. Then add the booze and mix. Then add the cool whip and mix. Put into small cups and freeze. Serve with little spoons. Makes 24 2oz. servings.

Variations:

  • White Chocolate instant pudding mix with Kahlua instead of Bailey's. (Use slightly less than 1/2 Cup or it will taste too boozy.)
  • Turtle instant pudding mix (they only carry this flavor around X-mas, so stock up when you see it!) with Caramel Bailey's.
  • Chocolate instant pudding mix with Mint Bailey's or peppermint schnapps.
  • French Vanilla instant pudding mix with 1/3 C Amaretto instead of the Bailey's.
  • I haven't tried this one yet, but imagine that Banana instant pudding mix and Brandy or Rum would be divine. If someone tries this combo, let me know how it turns out!
HOSTESS TIPS:
  1. You can get 2 oz plastic cups with lids at GFS or other restaurant supply stores. I know GFS has mini spoons, too. The lids are key because then you can stack the shots in your freezer.
  2. If you have a hard time getting the pudding shot mix into the little cups, you might try putting the pudding shot mix into a large plastic bag and cutting off the corner of the bag, thus creating a way to "pipe" the mix into the little cups. Personally, I did okay just scooping the pudding shot mix with a measuring cup and dripping it into the little cups.
  3. Top the shot with a little dollop of whipped cream for extra flair.

  1. I have been making these for nearly 10 years now. I will share a few secrets. I NEVER use instant pudding, it takes a little longer but the taste is so much better with cook and serve. The key to cook and serve is to make the pudding first on the stove using just 1C of milk (I also use the large boxes of pudding). I add 1 tub of whipped cream cheese while the pudding is still hot and stir until creamy. Once cool I add the booze and the cool whip! Cherry Pie Filling on top of Vanilla Pudding laced with Godiva White Chocolate Liquore is pretty sinful. Happy partying ladies.

  2. There is a local bar here that has these! They call them pudding pops - I've been looking for a recipe for so long! :)

  3. Use a ice cream or cookie scoop would be an easy way also. I am definitely going to try these for our next party!

  4. Any one of these recipes would be great in a trifle dessert. Thanks for the idea!

  5. These sound great but I'm not a fan of cool whip (or whipped cream in general) - what happens if you omit the cool whip?

    1. They are too thin and wont turn out right. You need the added cool whip for the fluffyness of the recipe.

    2. Two boxes of any instant pudding, 6 oz (total) liquor(s) of choice, 1 c. milk... Beat 2 mins. PERFECT pudding consistency... Freezing is optional... whipped cream is only needed if you want to garnish. And if you DO, I suggest whipping in about 2 oz liquor to 8oz Cool Whip. Mmmmm

    3. I do t like the "fakeness" of cool whip so I use the real whipped cream in the fridge section of your local store (reddi- whip).
It freezes up just fine and is Soooo creamy!

  6. JLew - you could try it! The consistency would be totally different. These pudding shots are very thick, almost like ice cream once they are frozen. I hardly taste the cool whip in the finished product. It just helps them freeze well and gives a good texture.

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone. I can't believe how many hits this post has been getting lately! Gotta love pinterest. :)

  7. To make the variations kind the chocolate pudding with peppermint schnapps. Do I follow the recipe and just add these or mix just these two things?

  8. Follow the basic recipe but substitute peppermint schnapps for the Baileys.

  9. I can't find the little condiment cups anywhere - think it would be okay to serve from small bowls or even small cups? Think I should still freeze it or just serve it chilled?

  12. SAHM I AM - maybe you could just use those Dixie bathroom cups and put a piece of cardboard between each level to stack them in the freezer. They taste much better frozen - kinda like alcoholic ice cream.

  17. you just need 3/4 c of any kind of alcohol - cheesecake pudding with 1/2 c. vanilla schnapps and 1/4 c. cherry schnapps is one of my favorites.

  18. Just a tip from someone who's made these for years....add a packet of plain knox gelatin to the milk and let sit for 5 minutes before mixing. It'll help the pudding shots have more of a "set" to them, if you put the pudding shots in the little condiment cups and freeze them for 8 hours, you won't have to use a spoon...they'll come out alot like jello shots with a quick swipe of the tongue around the edges.

  19. can't wait to try these at the race in Charlotte next week end. we usually have jello shots .

  25. Anyone have any ideas how to make a chocolate caramel pudding shot?? I would love to try that!

  28. I'm gearing up to make these to bring to the Bon Jovi concert! I figure once they are frozen, I'll throw them into a cooler with ice...maybe making them a little like soft-serve once we get there!

    I've decided on:
-vanilla pudding with vodka & peach schnapps
-chocolate pudding with amaretto and godiva chocolate liqueur
-pistachio pudding with ... well, i'm not actually sure yet. maybe whipped vodka?

i'll let you know how they are!

  29. Question, Couldn't find the Extra Creamy Cool Whip, is regular ok. And when you mix the Cool Whip in, is it straight out of the freezer?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The Cool Whip will mix better if it is NOT frozen. You can microwave it for 5 seconds and stir, then 5 more seconds and stir if you don't feel like waiting for it to thaw. I haven't tried regular Cool Whip in the recipe, but I'd imagine it would be fine.

  30. I just made these for the 1st time and they were AWESOME!

Chocolate with kahlua and vanilla rum
Cheesecake with vanilla rum and black cherry rum
Pistachio with whipped vodka and pineapple

I made the pudding with skim milk per the directions on the box and let it set for 30 minutes. Then I added cool whip and liquor. I used both regular and extra creamy cool whip, thawed, and tasted no difference. I also only used the recommended 1/4 c kahlua which I highly endorse vs an entire 1/2 c. Froze for about 6 hours and they were perfect consistency. What an awesome party starter!

    2. This is the only way I know how to make them. They taste like a cross between pudding and ice cream to me. Earlier in the comments someone mentioned just making pudding the regular way and substituting liquor for some of the milk. I have never tried it! Let me know if you try it and it works!

    3. After freezing them, you can bring them to room temperature and the consistency softens. Experiment to find that sweet spot between harder like ice cream when frozen and too soupy when warm, and you should get what you're looking for.

  35. Cheesecake and Rum Chata make a great combo! Frozen is great, as many have said, but I always end up taking them to a big camping event and it is impossible to keep them frozen (no, I don't have room for a dry ice cooler) and they end up thawing out and STILL are amazing! Everyone loves them. This year I'm going to try Lemon pudding with Lemoncello and crumbled lemon snaps on top.

  47. My friends always want me to bring both Jell-O shots and pudding shots to our parties! But storing them and transporting them has always been a hassle! Then I found these 14 1/4 x 9 5/8 x 5 7/8 inch plastic boxes. They are the perfect size to store 45 shots at a time. Now I can pull them all out of the freezer at once, put them in a cooler and cover with ice for longer trips. They are at Walmart!

By the way, I have dozens of recipes. Our favorites are:

"Beam Me Up Scotty" uses 1/4 C each Kahlua, Bsyleys and 99 Bananas with Banana Pudding.

"Caramel Apple Pie" uses Apple liqueur with Butterscotch Pudding

"Death By Chocolate" uses Godova Chocolate Liquer, Creme De Cocoa and Hershey's Instant Chocolate Pudding

"Screaming Orgasms" use Kahlua, Bayley's and Amaretto with Vanilla Pudding.

  48. By the way, I am known for making my Jell-O shots strong. To make the pudding shots stronger I tried using Bayley's instead of milk, but they came out too thin. I can't whip the powder to a pudding consistency without milk. Any suggestions out there?

    1. I don't think they would hold up as popsicles. They are more the consistency of soft serve ice cream and you eat them with a spoon.

  53. I made Apple pie pudding shots tonite with vanilla pudding, Apple vodka, conchata, milk and whipped cream. They taste good but they have a lot of an alcohol taste. Will freezing make that better?

  55. Puddung Shots! Seems like a great party already. Very innovative. Only thing I am concerned about is pudding shot means sweet+alcohol which can give you a serious hangover. So just don't forget to carry anti hangover drink to make sure you don't regret these amazing shots.

  58. I tried them with banana pudding and both with a brandy and with rum. I liked the rum better. I also used a mini vanilla wafer on the bottom of the cup (to act as a crust) and stuck one wafer on the top for a little decoration. Loved them! Will do in the future for our girls get togethers.

  59. Great shots! Looks like an awesome party. Very creative idea. My only concern is that pudding shots mix sweetness with alcohol, which could lead to a serious hangover. So, don't forget to take Dotshot - the hangover antioxidants drink to ensure you can enjoy these amazing shots without any regrets!
